Your guide will amuse you with incredible legends of medieval remedies and cures as well as introduce you to the best of magical medieval old town in Tallinn.
One of the most charming little walkways in all of Old Town, the medieval St. Catherine’s passage will lead us to the very heart of historic town center. We will admire the picturesque Lower Town, the fortified medieval Town Wall with many towers, the impressive over 600 year old Gothic Town Hall & Town Hall Square.
Dating back to 1422, the Town Hall Pharmacy is the oldest pharmacy in Europe that has continuously been in business in the same spot. Aside from providing town citizens with relief from their health woes, the pharmacy was also a place of joy and merriment. A multitude of noble clients had the habit of gathering in the building to make plans and drink claret, sometimes to excess. In 1467, the pharmacist was forced to ask permission to employ an extra apprentice specifically to serve wine to these revelers.
You will also learn the secrets behind claret and marzipan, as examples of some of the most famous remedies sold at the pharmacy in medieval times. Claret was made from red wine and spices and is a fairly potent, mouth warming concoction created at the Raeapteek apothecary shop in 1467. Marzipan however was one of the pharmacy’s best sellers, one that local legend insists was actually invented as a curative here in the 15th century already.
The list of items included also snakeskin potion, mummy juice and powdered unicorn horn. But this was also a place to buy everyday items like jam, tea, claret, gunpowder.
Your guide will take you to a tour in the pharmacy, where you will get introduced to the history of the pharmacy and medieval treating methods.
The historic site still operates as a pharmacy today, selling modern products, but its side room houses an interesting display of 17th- to 20th-century medicinal items.
